First of the Mustang memories

I've been surprised by how often people respond to word of my project with a Mustang memory. These stories are so common – and so fun – that I've decided to collect them. Here's the first, written by my longtime boss, mentor, co-author and great friend, Mike.

Travels with Charley

So, second semester freshman year, UF (Go Gators!), January 1965, I get a new roommate, Charley Herman, from New Jersey. Nice guy, several cuts above me in wallet size. First thing I know, we’ve got the only shag-carpeted room in Hume Hall. Next thing, he tells me he’s got a car. Verboten, but hey, cool. It’s a Mustang convertible, silver. Weekends, we rule. Spring break, we cruise to Virginia. I love the endless hood. I love the horse head on the grille. I love top down. I love the power. Semester ends, I flunk out. Goodbye, Gainesville. Goodbye, Charley. Thanks for the Mustang memory.
